Think backwards ...

Posted on in Business

A technique used by Amazon and worth considering for any size of business. Essentially, before you develop a new product or service write the press release explaining the benefits to your customers.

Will it delight your customers?

If the press release looks a bit weak and doesn’t pass the ‘so what’ test then maybe more work is required to develop the idea further.

Ultimately the press release will be either just right and you'll have a clear vision of what you're offering and why your customers will be delighted OR you'll realise it's just not unique enough to justify the cost of developing and promoting it.

How is the 'think backwards' approach different?

The traditional approach to new product/service development is to broadly start with the outline proposition. This is then developed into the solution in parallel with a myriad of business management techniques to ensure it's worth the investment in time and money.

Now, all of these techniques are important however, reversing the process affords greater flexibility in allowing you to put the customer first and crystallise the customer benefits upfront before the solution becomes set in stone.
