Are you responsive to your customers?

Posted on in Websites

A rhetorical question as all businesses who wish to stay in business with shout YES!

But is your website just as responsive?

By this we mean does your website work seamlessly across smartphones and tablets to laptops and desktops giving all your website visitors, regardless of the device they are using, the very best in browsing experience?

Why are responsive websites suddenly so important?

A recent Gartner Inc., report (June 2013) stated that “… traditional PC shipments had declined by 10.6% in 2013, while tablet shipments increase 67.9% … the market is being driven by sales in tablets, smartphones, and to a lesser extent ultramobiles as PC shipments are on the decline … the sharp decline in PC sales was the result in a change in preferences in consumers’ wants and needs.”

“Consumers want anytime-anywhere computing that allows them to consume and create content with ease, but also share and access that content from a different portfolio of products. Mobility is paramount in both mature and emerging markets,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

Should I take action?

It’s clear that smartphones and tablets are being used more and more for web access. You only have to observe people in the street, on the train and bus, in the coffee house and pub, around the office and in the home to see how pervasive these devices have become. To coin the old Martini advert internet access has become "any time, any place, anywhere".

If your website requires visitors to pinch, zoom and scroll to read what you have written and your competitor’s site reformats their web pages automatically depending on the device being used which would you prefer to interact with?

Responsive websites are no longer a nice to have. From small and medium sized businesses (like us) to the UK government (gov.uk) and the largest corporations (like microsoft.com and starbucks.co.uk) all are embracing the change in web trends and redesigning their websites to be responsive.
